The following excerpt is from Chapter 11of My Baby Can Dance and was written by Janice Guice, M.A., C.C.C.-S.L.P.:
In May, 2004 I attended a two-day seminar presented by Dr. Gutstein about the Relationship Development Intervention® Program. I had previously read his book, Solving the Relationship Puzzle. I thought it had some interesting concepts in it but, I was not moved enough to adopt it as a new approach and instead I merely stored the parts I found useful in my eclectic files for future use. However, the seminar was different. In his words and the videos of various children was the aspect of communication that results in relationships. It was so evident and yet I was scared to believe it was true. Had this man merely gotten lucky and had the added fortune to catch it on video tape? I listened while Dr. Sheely met with professionals interested in becoming certified in the RDI® Program. It seemed exciting and yet I was terrified by the financial commitment that it would require. What if it was a hoax or the “therapy of the month?”
I mulled the seminar over in my head for a week or so and finally sat down to talk with my husband about becoming certified. I shared with him that I was not sure I could ethically or morally, continue to provide therapy in the manner I had for years knowing that there was something out there that could change the future for these children. On the one hand, had I not been where these families were, praying and hoping for a future that was bright and counting on professionals to take my son into that future? On the other hand, it wasn’t a great time in our lives to be tackling a financial or time commitment of this magnitude. Following the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, my husband’s career had taken a never imagined turn and he was rebuilding after over a year of unemployment. Within a year both of our sons would be in college and I had a private practice in its infancy. Despite these overriding issues, my husband calmly encouraged me to explore the details of RDI® certification. After review of the paperwork for certification and discussions with the staff at the Connections Center in Houston I signed on. I knew that I was headed down a path that would change me and my professional career. ~ Pg. 275
……Fourteen months into this, it is easier for me to envision that we will eventually arrive at a place where every child with autism can share in meaningful relationships; that every child will have the opportunity to experience the world with a blending of emotion, purposeful thought and a full range of typical responses to what they experience. Until we get there, I invite you to begin the journey. ~ Pg.300
